Η 72η και πρώτη virtual τελετή των βραβείων Emmy φιλοξενήθηκε στο Staples Center στο κέντρο του Λος Άντζελες, με παρουσιαστή τον Jimmy Kimmel.
Η καναδική κωμωδία “Ο Schitt’s Creek” σάρωσε τις κατηγορίες κωμωδίας. Ήταν η πρώτη φορά στην ιστορία των βραβείων Emmy που μια καναδέζικη εκπομπή κέρδισε τόσα πολλά βραβεία. Επίσης απέσπασε και τα τέσσερα Emmys ερμηνείας (κάτι που δεν έχει καταφέρει ποτέ ούτε δραματική σειρά). To επίκαιρο «Watchmen» του κέρδισε τα περισσότερα βραβεία (11 συνολικά) και έγινε η πρώτη σειρά που βασίζεται σε κόμικ με Emmy Καλύτερης Μίνι-Σειράς.
